   This very, very, very red macaw, the Capri Macaw is a third generation macaw with a whole lot of Scarlet Macaw mixed in!

The Capri Macaw is a hybrid cross between a Camelot Macaw and a Scarlet Macaw. A third generation hybrid macaw, the Capri Macaw has lots of Scarlet Macaw in its parentage.The Scarlet Macaw has been the best known South American parrot for over 100 years. It is one of the most popular macaws, frequently described as "beautiful and striking". The Capri Macaw inherits all that beautiful coloring and more.

   The Scarlet is one of the parents in the first generation hybrid macaw, then again in the second crossing, and finally again in the last generation. The Capri Macaw has 7/8's of its parentage coming from the Scarlet Macaw, so will be highly influenced by the traits and characteristics of this species. This third generation hybrid macaw was developed from these crossings:

1st - Scarlet Macaw crossed with a Blue and Gold Macaw = Catalina Macaw

2nd - Scarlet Macaw crossed with a Catalina Macaw = Camelot Macaw

3rd - Scarlet Macaw crossed with a Camelot Macaw = Capri Macaw

   The personality of a Scarlet is such that it requires good socialization and a firm consistent hand in training, especially as it matures. When comparing the characteristics of birds, keep in mind that hybrid macaws are a mixture of their parents. Their behavior and temperament is not absolutely certain. Capri Macaw can have the characteristics of the Scarlet. It can also have some of the gentle nature and the speaking ability of the Blue and Gold Macaw mixed in. The hybrid Capri Macaw can be a very affectionate, inquisitive, and fun pet; but may very likely need solid, unintimidated handling from its keeper.

   The Capri Macaw is a third generation hybrid, a cross between: Camelot Macaw hybrid (see above) and Scarlet Macaw Ara macao.

Distribution:

   ThIs is a captive bred hybrid macaw. Hybrid macaws are rarely found in the wild.

Description:

   Capri Macaws are very colorful though predominantly carrying the beautiful red coloration from the Scarlet Macaw portion of their parentage. They are a full size Macaw and are highly intelligent and inquisitive. From the Blue and Gold Macaw parentage, they may learn to talk with a general vocabulary of about 15 or more words or expressions.

   Hybrids are usually bred for color rather than personality, so their characteristics can be uncertain. A Capri needs good socialization and a firm consistent hand in training, especially it matures.

Size - Weight:

   The Capri Macaw is a full sized macaw, very close to the same size as its parentage. They will reach over 2 pounds. The length of the Scarlet Macaw is up to 85 cm (33.5 inches) and the Blue and Gold Macaw is up to 86 cm (34 inches), so the Capri will be about the same.

Care and feeding:

   A roomy cage is required unless the bird is to be let out for extended periods. Many birds can spend most of their time on a play pen or parrot perch. They eat a variety of seeds, nuts, fruits, and commercial pellets, as well as the same nutritional foods humans eat

Social Behaviors:

   Though the characteristics of birds that are hybrids are uncertain, they are a typical macaw. Hybrid Capri Macaws can be cranky at times and may even be a one person bird or only like men or women unless well socialized with lots of folks

Breeding/Reproduction:

   This is a hybrid and it use to be that they were generally not bred, however the breeding of hybrids is becoming more common

Sexual differences:

   No visible differences.

Potential Problems:

   Can be noisy (as can all macaws). 

Availability:

   The Capri Macaw is quite rare and fairly expensive. There are more and more breeders however, so finding these macaws for sale may become easier as they may become more available.
